How have you engaged your staff to cultivate new leaders?

George Sparks, President and CEO of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, talks about the succession planning. It’s the executive’s role, he suggests, to help staff members create a plan for their future. An interesting exercise he deploys is to ask staff to write their own retirement press release… when they first join the team. This forces them to be explicit about what it is they want to accomplish in their time at the museum, which helps inform them of the skills needed and contacts to be made.
